As part of ODIN’s broader initiative to support better workflows and technology adoption across member libraries, we are excited to partner with Clarivate for a focused training session on Alma Cloud Apps!
Clarivate will provide an overview of how Cloud Apps work, demonstrate real-world use cases for two popular ones, and show you how to check if cloud apps are enabled at your institution. This is a great opportunity to explore tools that can boost efficiency and reduce manual work.
Topics Covered:
- How to enable and access
- Cloud Apps Overview of Item Creator and Alma Refine.
- Use cases and examples
Using GeoNames in Alma Refine
As a follow up, there was a question about support for GeoNames and the 651 field for Alma Refine. Here's some additional information on that:
To configure Alma Refine for geographic fields:
- Open the Alma Refine app settings (three dots > Configure).
- Select GeoNames as the enrichment service.
- Specify the MARC fields you want refined — commonly 651, 751, and optionally 662 for hierarchical place names.
- Set the output subfield to $1 (or $0 depending on your local policy).
This configuration allows Alma Refine to query the GeoNames reconciliation endpoint and return canonical URIs. For example, a heading like 651 _7 $a Springfield (Ill.) $2 <your vocabulary> can be enriched with $1 https://www.geonames.org/4250542.
